RESURRECTION SUNDAY-4

Luke 24:1-9

Key Verse - "Why seek ye the living among the dead?", Luke 24:5

"24:1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

8 And they remembered his words,

9 And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest."

Among the great events concerning Jesus Christ of Nazareth are: His birth, His death, His burial, His resurrection, His ascension, His preparation of a place/mansion for us, and His coming again. A second group beyond these seven might be: The changing of our bodies from vile to glorious, the giving of crowns and rewards, and the appointments to reign with Him, etc.
Our text deals with the discovery of His resurrection. I note a careful action which might bring more pain to the disciples --- it was women who were told of His resurrection first by the "two men" (referred to as "angels" in vs. 23).
The angel's question was both challenging and perhaps chiding. "Why seek ye the living among the dead?" The women had not come expecting Christ to be risen for they brought spices which they had prepared the night before, expecting to anoint His body, Luke 23:56.
The angels stated in words clear and plain; "He is not here, but is risen:...", vs 6 They were called upon to remember His words "when he was yet in Galilee . . .", vs 6; a clear note may be made at this juncture --- Jesus was the focus of heaven during His earthly visitation --- all eyes were apparently on Him for He was on a most important mission. That journey involved providing salvation for men's souls --- yours and mine among them.
The angels tell them what Jesus had said, vs 7. They, then, remembered His words. How many times have we forgotten important matters and remembered them upon being reminded. We might say something like this: 'Ah, yes - it comes back to me now!'
The good news of His resurrection was told to the eleven and all the rest, vs 9. This might have been an embarrassment to the Romans, for they placed guards (keepers) so the disciples might not steal His body away and make it look bad for them, 27:62-66 of Matthew. These "keepers" were thwarted, Matthew 28:4.
The defeated elders of Israel concocted a lie to try to explain this phenonemon, Matthew 28:11-15. The reluctant disciples got amended (corrected) and hailed it forth, and others have carried the truth to our present time. Jesus said He would be raised from the dead the third day and so it was done. The importance of that action is seen in the gospel message today. DDH.
