Story of Soldier's Providential Escape From Death

PFC Brendan Schweigart was helping to retrieve a tank in Iraq when he felt as if he had been hit with a sledge hammer.

It was deadly fire from an enemy sniper.

But this day called up a miracle for the young soldier who believes in God and the teachings of the Bible.

According to a report by NBC affiliate WGRZ, the bullet missed Schweigart's vital organs because over his heart was a Bible.

Scott says it's the one he got at boot camp. The Bible acted as a shield, that trapped the bullet. He had promised his mother that he would always carry his Bible into battle.

Schweigart's mother Kim Scott told reporters that her son grew up going to church and Bible Camp. In 2006, at the age of 22, he left his three siblings to join the army. He went to work on trucks in Iraq.

Last week, according to the report, he was two miles from his base in Rustamiyah, Baghdad when his unit came under attack.

Schweigart was the only hit, says his mother, who described his wounds.

"Through the back of the arm, his left arm, there's a hole going in, a hole coming out, and then one coming into the side of his chest and one coming out," she said.

"The doctors told him he was one lucky boy," she added.

Schweigart received the Purple Heart medal last Sunday. He's already out of the hospital and on light duty.

Scott says he'll return to duty after a few weeks.
