A REWARDING PATH

"And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me."

Luke 9:23 King James Version

What does it mean to deny ourselves? Sometimes, it means to let someone get the last word. It also means to shut off the television and go visit someone, or call someone on the telephone. God has impressed upon my heart that if we spend as much time visiting and calling people as we do watching television, there would be a lot less depression in this world.

We will have obstacles placed in our path every day, but we must go to Jesus and ask Him to please help us climb over them. Many days we have people who criticize us, ridicule us, and tell us what we are doing wrong. We still need to take up the Cross of Jesus and follow Him.

When I was married, I always had to have the last word, especially if I knew that my husband was wrong. It didn’t solve anything, and just caused more conflict and bitterness between us. We don’t have to have the last word even if we are right. Jesus knows our hearts, and He will reward us for being quiet when we want to get the last word.

Yes, the path to serving Jesus is sometimes rocky and full of criticism, but the reward of serving Jesus is worth it all. Not only do we have a less stressful life by keeping quiet when we want to say something, we make Jesus happy. Making Jesus happy should be the reason that we do or say anything.
