HAVE WE TOLD OUR CHILDREN

“I will extol thee, my God, O king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever. Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.”

Psalm 145: 1 – 5 King James Version

On one of the Gaither Homecoming Videos, Gloria talks about when their children were little and she was taking them to all of their activities and running errands for them and taking them to the dentist. She said that she took her son to McDonald’s to buy him a hamburger before he fainted. She said “At night when I lie in bed, I know that I took the children to all the places they needed to go. I told them to brush their teeth and write thank you cards to people. I told them to make their beds and I helped them with their homework but when did I tell them the important things about Jesus, things that will last them forever”?

I think a question that all of us who are parents should ask ourselves is “Have I told my children and grandchildren what Jesus has done for me”? We take our children to church and our children hear us sing in church. We pray for our children and with them but when have we told them how Jesus brought us through dark valleys and sat us on the mountain tops that are illuminated with His light?

How are they going to know that Jesus is able to protect them and bring them through every crisis if we don’t tell them? One of the most difficult times in our children’s lives is when they are teenagers. The peer pressure becomes greater in high school than it was for them when they were in grade school.

Teenage boys tell their girlfriends “If you love me, you would have sex with me”. Many times the girls give in and have sex with them because not only are they afraid of losing their boyfriends, but because that is the only time they get any kind of affection from anybody. One day we as parents will stand before a Holy God and give an account as to why we didn’t hug our children. Our children need to know that they are loved. If they don’t receive love and affection at home, they will look for it some place else. May God forgive us for neglecting to tell our children how much Jesus loves them.

Have you told your children and grandchildren what Jesus has done for you? You may have told them that He saved you, but have you told them of the many times that He has protected you, encouraged you, comforted you and gave you understanding and unconditional love? The most important thing that we can do for our children is to tell them how wonderful Jesus is and that He is able to take them through any difficult situation victoriously. Let’s tell our children how great Jesus is and tell them all the wonderful things He has done for us.
