HE COULD HAVE

“And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.”

Luke 23: 33, 34 King James Version

I saw a family program on television last night. A little girl had fallen down a hole in a mine and she had fallen a long way down. As I watched the horror and heartache on her parents’ faces because they were unable to reach their child, the thought came to me that God could have stopped the crucifixion of His Son. He had the power to do so, but just as Love from the heart of Jesus kept Him on that cruel cross, the Love that God has for us allowed the torture, humiliation and abuse of His Son to continue. The little girl was rescued and there was a happy ending to the show but Jesus was not rescued and there was a tragic and heartbreaking end.

There is a song with the words “He could have called ten thousand angels to destroy the world and set Him free. He could have called ten thousand angels but He died alone for you and me”. What amazing, unselfish and unconditional Love from the heart of our wonderful Saviour! There is no one like Jesus! No one loves like Jesus Loves us! There is no friend like Jesus!

There is another song that I love “No one ever cared for me like Jesus. There’s no other friend so kind and true. No one else could take the sin and darkness from me. O how much He cares for me”. Jesus could have come down from the cross if He wanted to do so. God could have stopped the crucifixion, but He didn’t. In the light of all this sacrificial Love from Jesus, how can we not love Him and serve Him with all of our hearts?
