HOW LONG

“Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, E’li, E’li, la’ma sa-bach-tha’ni? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

Matthew 27: 45, 46 King James Version

The Bible says in 2 Peter 3:8 “But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day”. As our beloved Saviour hung on that cross in excruciating pain and agony, whether or not the three hours were longer that we count three hours, I’m sure that He felt it was much longer.

He had been beaten beyond recognition but more than that, He was totally alone because His Father had to turn away from Him. Jesus had taken our sins on Him and God can not look on sin. There are times when we feel alone but if we have invited Jesus into our hearts to be our personal Saviour, we are never alone. He has promised that He will never leave us or forsake us. However, Jesus was all alone and nobody comforted Him.

We have heard, written and read so much about the crucifixion but I don’t think any of us realize how lonely and scared Jesus was as He hung there for us. He was human just as we are and felt the same feelings that we feel. He suffered all of this for us. His heart was broken time and time again as they ridiculed and cursed Him.

How can we keep hurting Him like we do when we are unkind to people? Hasn’t He suffered enough? I wonder if sometimes He doesn’t say to His Father “Don’t they care about all the horror and agony that I suffered for them? Why don’t they love Me”? How dare we keep hurting Jesus!
