I NEVER KNEW

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Matthew 5: 14 – 16 King James Version

A friend of mine told a story about an elderly man who was a pillar of the community and she really cared about him. She went to visit him, but he had died. She said “I never was really sure if he knew the Lord”. What a tragedy to die and people not be certain that we knew the Lord.

If we have made a heart commitment to Jesus, asked Him to forgive our sins, come into our hearts and save us we have the light of Jesus in our hearts. His light is not to be hidden. We are to live our lives in such a way that people will not only see and hear Jesus in our actions and words, they will know that we love Him.

The verse says “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven”. This is not talking about telling everybody how much money we give to the poor and to charities. It is telling us that we need to do things that will draw attention to Jesus and glorify our Father. A word of caution! If you are doing something, be it your job or anything else, and it does not draw attention to Jesus, you need to pray and ask Him what He would have you do about it.

Everything that we say or do should be to glorify our Father and lead people to Jesus. We are not Jesus; we don’t have the power to save anyone, but we are to lead them to the One who does have the power, and His name is Jesus. There is nothing, absolutely nothing that should come before telling people of His love for them and especially showing people His love. One day, we will stand before a holy God and He will ask us why we didn’t live for Jesus. He won’t be interested in all of our job accomplishments or in how many degrees we have earned. His focus will be centered on our hearts and how we lived.

If you were to die today, would people be able to say that you were saved and that you loved Jesus? If not, I urge you to do a heart checkup immediately. Not only are you going to die without Jesus, you are breaking the heart of our Saviour whose body was beaten, bruised and broken for you on a cross of horror and agony. Say yes to Jesus now before it is too late. Don’t put it off! Even one more hour may be too late for you!
