IT WOULDN’T LOCK

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Matthew 6: 19 – 21 King James Version

My landlord just came by to see if he had a key that worked in the lock on my door. While he was here, I asked him to please check the dead bolt on the door because I was unable to lock it. He tried and tried but couldn’t get it locked so he sent the maintenance man to fix it. The maintenance man fixed it within five minutes. He said it just needed some adjusting. There are times when our hearts need adjusting regarding our priorities and treasures. Sometimes we become greedy and selfish and lock the door to our hearts.

Many years ago while going door to door on visitation for my church I asked this lady who lived in a big beautiful home with a swimming pool and three car garage “If you knew God was telling you to sell your home and give all the money to missions, would you do it”? She didn’t even stop to think about it. She immediately replied “Absolutely not! I’ve worked hard for this all my life and it all belongs to me”. How that statement must have broken the heart of our dear Saviour! God may never call us to sell our homes but we should be willing to do so if He asks that of us.

We may think that we don’t have the time to serve Jesus because of our jobs and families. Someone once told me “If something is important enough to you, then you will make the time for it no matter what you have to do. What a true statement that is! If serving Jesus is important to you, then you will make the time. It may mean that you have to shut off the television and pick up the telephone and call someone who is hurting and desperately needs to know someone cares. You may need to send an email to someone who is lonely and needs encouragement. Perhaps you might need to go visit someone even if you don’t have the time and is inconvenient for you because it doesn’t fit into your schedule.

I told Jesus that I was confused about something. I asked Him “How did You always have the time to talk to people because You were the busiest person there ever was or ever will be and the people never had to make an appointment with You”? He told me “It wasn’t a matter of having to make time for them; I Loved them. They were important to Me and that was My mission to let them know how much I Loved them”. Would to God that we would love others with the unconditional Love of Jesus like He Loves people!

O’ dear friends, what is your mission today? Is it to make more money to buy material things or is it to spread the Love of Jesus to people who are hurting and have no hope? It is true that we do have to buy groceries and pay bills, but we don’t have to have all the extras. It’s nice to have them; however we can’t take them with us when we die. We can’t give them to Jesus but we can give Him the people that we have encouraged and loved with His unconditional Love. Do you really love Jesus? If so, are you willing to unlock the door of your heart and give Him more of your time?
