KINDNESS FIRST

“But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.”

James 3: 8 – 10 King James Version

Yesterday someone sent me an email telling me that I had made an error in a Scripture reference in my devotional. However, before the person told me about the error, he told me that he enjoyed my devotionals. What was he doing? He was being kind first before correcting me and because of that, I did not feel that he was criticizing me.

I felt that he wanted to help me. I really appreciated him pointing it out to me. Had he told me about the error before he said something kind, I would have deleted it and not even read it because I would have assumed it was just another email full of criticism which I get all the time.

We need to be very careful when we say things to people so they don’t interpret what we are saying the wrong way. We may really want to help them but because of our attitudes and the way we say something, it may cause them to not only doubt their self-worth but also to doubt that Jesus loves them.

Jesus says kind and loving words to us before He says things to correct us. The first thing He tells us is that He loves us. To Jesus, letting us know how much He loves us is very important and comes first before everything else. Oh that we would tell people that Jesus loves them before we give them advice or instructions.

When you say something to correct someone, are you first telling the person that Jesus loves him or her? Anything that we say or do should be to point others to Jesus and bring honor and glory to His precious name. Lifting up and exalting our wonderful Saviour should be our first priority in life. It is very important that we are kind to people. Even more important than that, we should be kind to Jesus. Are you being kind to Jesus? Do you say kind and loving things to Him? Does He know that you love Him?
