OUR MERCIFUL SAVIOUR

“And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you? They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.”

Matthew 20: 29 - 34 King James Version

Several years ago while riding the bus; I had the privilege of riding every day with a wonderful lady who was blind. I was awed and amazed at her cheerfulness and positive outlook on life. Not one time in the six months that we rode the bus together did I ever hear her complain about being blind. I don’t remember ever seeing her that she didn’t have a smile on her face. She talked with the other riders on the bus and usually had us laughing in five minutes after she started talking. This dear lady was physically blind but she had the love of Jesus in her heart and it was evident in the things she said and in her facial expressions.

There is another kind of blindness which results in death. There is no prescription the doctors can give us that will help; the only cure for it is the mercy of our loving Saviour. Before we asked Jesus to forgive us for our sins and come into our hearts to be our personal Saviour, we were walking in the blindness of our sins and rotten attitudes. It is only through the shed blood of our merciful Saviour that we have forgiveness of our sins, hope for tomorrow and a home in heaven with Him for all eternity.

Unless there has been a time in your life when you admitted you were a sinner and cried out to our merciful Saviour for the forgiveness of your sins, you are blind and walking in the darkness of the bondage of satan. You will never have light in your heart until you fall in love with Jesus and give Him your heart and life and allow Him to cleanse you in His redeeming blood that He shed for you on the cruel cross of Calvary. After you give Him your heart, you must allow Him to be the Master of your life. He paid for all of your sins when He died on that cross of horror; not just for one of your sins, but for all of your sins. He has earned the right to be our guide and boss.

Jesus had compassion on us and removed the blindness and darkness of our sinful hearts from us and replaced them with His glorious light of love, mercy and forgiveness. We also need to have mercy and compassion for those who hurt us and forgive them just as Jesus forgave us. I think sometimes that we bury our heads in the sand and forget that we also hurt people. We are not perfect; the only perfect person was Jesus. We expect them to forgive us yet many times we are not willing to forgive them. How that must break the heart of our precious Saviour. Thank God for the love and compassion of Jesus, our merciful Saviour!
