PUT A LOCK ON OUR MOUTHS

“Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties.”

Psalm 141: 3, 4 King James Version

The prayer of every Christian who truly loves Jesus should be “Father, please put a lock on my mouth. Don’t let me say or do anything that would bring shame to You and hurt You”. When Jesus applies His precious atoning blood to our hearts on the day that we are gloriously saved, He removes all the filth and garbage of our sins and our past lives and replaces them with His kindness, compassion, mercy, grace and love. However, even though we are saved, we are still in the flesh and as long as we are on this earth we will hurt people by our words and by our actions. The difference is that before we were saved we didn’t care if we hurt people and now we do care because we don’t want to bring shame upon the precious name of our Saviour.

I think all of us at one time or another in our lives have been attacked by cruel, sarcastic and critical words that someone has said to us. Those hateful and devastating words enter into our hearts like someone has taken a long sharp knife and plunged it deep into our hearts. These hateful words wound us; they hurt and kill us emotionally. It’s bad enough when people say unkind things to us but when somebody that we are related to says these harmful words to us; we tend to lose our self confidence and doubt that Jesus could love us.

The good thing about all of these hurtful attacks by people and by satan is that we have a Saviour who constantly encourages us and tells us that He loves us. He gently puts His arms of unconditional love around us and whispers softly in our ears “I love you and I understand the pain and doubts that you are feeling”. He leans down, gives us a big hug, kisses our tears away and holds us close to His loving heart. No matter how many times a day we get discouraged and down we can always go to Jesus. He will be faithful to once again remove the poisonous arrows of criticism, sarcasm and hatred from our hearts. He is the only one who can heal a broken heart and He is the only one who can take the doubts, fears and hurt from us. He replaces them with His joy, peace and tenderness. What a Saviour we serve, this Jesus of Nazareth!

O friends, guard your mouth! Don’t say hateful, critical and sarcastic words to people and especially don’t say them to your loved ones. If you have to go to Jesus every five minutes to keep from saying something unkind in the midst of an argument, run as fast as you can to Him and ask Him to lock your mouth so you don’t hurt people and thereby hurt Him. Jesus has told us that when we are unkind to people we are unkind to Him. The Bible says “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” ( Matthew 25: 40). Are your words bringing happiness to Jesus or are they making Him sad?
