Several years ago in Texas, I volunteered at a non profit organization and one of my duties was to call the Board of Directors and pass along messages from the Director of the Organization. I remember one day, I called this doctor and his answering machine picked up and said that he was with a patient. I left him the message and told him to have a nice day.
The next day, I waited until I knew that he was seeing patients and called and left a personal message on his machine telling him that he was doing a great service for people and thanked him for dedicating his life to medicine. I called every day for six months and left a short message saying something to encourage him.
I didn’t know if he ever listened to the messages or not, but I just felt I should leave them. I wasn’t serving Jesus then, had not even dedicated my life to Jesus at that time. However, I have always tried to say kind things to people. One day, I was very busy and forgot to call Steve. The next day he called me and asked me why I hadn’t left him a message on his machine. He said my messages was one of the things that kept him going in the midst of heartaches and trials.
We need to be encouragers for Jesus. The encouraging words we say to people may literally save a life, and the cruel words we say to people may cause them to commit suicide. Are you saying kind or cruel words to your loved ones?
