THE DEPTHS OF HIS LOVE

“And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him. And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.”

Mark 5: 1 – 6, 15 King James Version

Oh, the depths of the love of Jesus! One terrifying day many years ago, I lay underneath a bed in a mental hospital afraid to come out because I was afraid of being abused again. I was afraid of everyone and everything and I didn’t trust anybody. As I was lying there underneath that bed, I cried out to Jesus and said “If You will help me and get me out of this place, I will serve You”. It didn’t happen overnight but Jesus calmed my fears and put the broken pieces of my heart and life together. He assured me that He would never let anybody abuse me again. What amazing love from the heart of my precious Savior!

I watched a family program last night on a DVD. It was about a family with two small boys. The scene that touched me the most was the love in the parents eyes when the parents looked at their sons. I could see the tears in the parent’s eyes as each one of them reached down and hugged their sons close to them.

The parents couldn’t even tell their children why they were crying; that the reason that they were crying was because their hearts were filled to overflowing because they loved them so much. How could they put into words the love they had for their children; a love that so overwhelmed them that it made speech impossible? All they could do was hug them tightly and thank God for their children. This family was a very close family filled with respect for one another.

Oh, that all parents would hug their children tightly so their children will feel that their parents do love them. There are so many children who don’t believe that their parents love them. It breaks my heart when children tell me that their parents don’t love them. I think some of the parents do love their children but they have never told them that they love them or hugged them. How are children going to know that their parents love them if the parents don’t tell their children that they love them and if they don’t hug their children?

I believe that as Jesus looks at us that His heart is filled with so much love for us that He puts His arms around us and hugs each one of us. He is overcome with emotion and He doesn’t say anything at that moment because of the overwhelming love He feels for us. What a joy and what a privilege to be loved by the Saviour of the world! No one loves us like Jesus loves us. There is no one like Jesus! He is a friend beyond compare.

It is wonderful to know that He loves us this much but I think the question we need to ask ourselves is “How much do I love Jesus”? I wonder if there been times in our lives when we were so overcome with our love for Jesus that we weren’t able to talk to Him. Have we hugged Him and held Him close in our hearts? If we were to love Jesus even a fingernail’s worth as much as He loves us, I believe that we would make Him very happy. How deep is your love for Jesus and how much of your life have you committed to Him?
