THE GREATEST DECISION OF ALL

“Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision.”

Joel 3: 14 King James Version

We have so many decisions to make in this life. When we are growing up we have to decide who our friends in school are going to be and who we will date? There are decisions to be made about what college to attend. We must decide what our major is going to be in college and what we want to do with our lives. Then we have to decide where we want to work.

When we get married we have to decide if we want a big or a small wedding and if we are going to get married in church or some place else. We have to decide where we will go on our honeymoon. We have to decide where we are going to live and what kind of car we will buy. When we have children, we have to decide what to name them.

However, the greatest decision of all is the question “What do we do with Jesus”? Every one of us has to make that decision and nobody can make it for us. What do we do with this beautiful and precious Saviour who became a sacrifice for us and died for us? There are only two choices that we can make. We can ask Him to forgive us of our sins and come into our hearts to be our personal Saviour or we can reject the sacrifice that He made for us thereby breaking His heart and then spend all eternity without Him.

We sing this song “I Have Decided To Follow Jesus” but have we really decided to follow Him? We might have accepted Him as our personal Saviour but are there times when we do what we want to do instead of doing what He asks us to do? Are we following in His footsteps? Are we telling everyone we meet how much Jesus loves them? We can preach, teach and write about all the events in the Bible but if we neglect to tell them that He loves them, then we are not doing what Jesus has commanded us to do. He has commanded us to spread His unconditional love to everyone.

I heard a doctor say one time “I learned a lot of things when I was in college and in medical school but they didn’t teach me how to heal a broken heart when someone loses a family member. I feel so inadequate and I never know what to say to comfort the family”. If we are Christians then we are serving the great Physician and we do know what to say. Jesus has not only told us what to say to comfort a person who is lonely, hurting and in pain, He has set the example many times for us in the Bible. It is up to us to carry on the mission that He has entrusted to us and that is to spread His unconditional love to our families, our friends and to a hurting world.

Have you decided to follow Jesus? Do you pick up your cross daily and carry on even in the midst of criticism, rejection and sarcasm? We can’t do it alone because we don’t have that kind of unconditional love. It is only with Jesus holding our hands and leading us that we are able to serve Him effectively as He desires us to serve Him. Again, I ask you, have you decided to follow Jesus?
