Jesus is our lighthouse of love. Not only does He take us out of the darkness of sin and bondage into the glorious light of salvation and freedom, He leads us in paths of happiness, peace and joy that we have never known. When people say criticizing and judgmental things to us, even if the people who said them didn’t mean to sound critical it hurts us, He takes the darkness of hurt, despair and discouragement from our hearts and replaces them with the light of His approval, compassion, understanding and unconditional love.
He said that He will bring the blind by a way that they knew not. Our country is blind. I read in the newspaper a few months ago that our city is building huge buildings which cost millions of dollars and yet every day in the city where I live and where you live there are children who are going to bed hungry. We don’t have to go to a different country to find children who are hungry. Not only are they hungry for food; they are starving for approval, for friendships and for someone who really cares about them.
Look around your own neighborhood. Some people may have big homes, big cars, swimming pools and yachts but some of these people can’t pay what they charged on their credit cards. I know of children in my own neighborhood whose parents drive big cars and live in a big house, yet three years ago one of these precious children came to my home with tears in his eyes and said he was hungry.
May God forgive us for being so blind; for spending money on things that have almost become an idol to us and for neglecting our children. These dear children are not ours; they belong to God and He just gives them to us to be His babysitters. How often we fail to do what He has commanded us to do with His children. Oh that we would be a lighthouse of love to our children just as God is to us!
Yet through all of the criticism, sarcasm, and heartaches Jesus has promised that He will never leave us. When the darkness of discouragement creeps into our hearts and it will, we need to cling as tightly as we can to our lighthouse of love, Jesus. He will never fail us, criticize us or condemn us. He may correct us but He will do it out of a heart filled with unconditional love for us. He won’t yell at us or hit us; He will speak firmly but gently to us. We will feel shame because of the way we treated Him but we will always come out of His woodshed knowing without a doubt that He loves us. Thank God for our lighthouse of love, Jesus!
