THE NEEDFUL THING

“And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

Luke 10: 39 - 42 King James Version

I used to think that my house had to be spotless all the time, and that if I didn’t make my bed, it was terrible. A lot of times I can be in the middle of house cleaning, and God will lay it on my heart to stop and send an encouraging email to someone. It is important that we keep our homes clean, but it is more important that we take time for Jesus.

No matter what we are doing, if Jesus lays it on our hearts to call someone or send an email of encouragement and love, then we need to be obedient and do it as soon as He tells us to do it. It is more important that people be reassured of the Love of Jesus, than it is to make our beds.

Sometimes we allow our focus to be placed on temporary things instead of on things that will last for Eternity. The thing that will last forever is the love that we give to Jesus, and to one another. We concentrate on how we are feeling, rather than on how someone else is feeling. God may want to use us to encourage someone today and we need to be ready.

What is the most important thing in your life today, material things or serving Jesus? If serving Jesus is not your first priority, then you need to do a heart checkup.
