THEY STILL HAVE FEELINGS

“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice, and I am persuaded that in thee also.”

2 Timothy 1: 5 King James Version

When I worked in the nursing home several years ago, I heard a patient make a comment to her roommate that I have never forgotten. She said “I may not be able to walk as good or remember like before but I still have feelings. I still laugh and cry just like everyone else. My family put me here and only come to see me once a month. They never call me or write me and it hurts. I have three children and even though they are grown and have their own families, they are still my babies.”

We can learn so much from elderly people if we will only listen to them. They have forgotten more than we will ever know. They have faced hardships and trials worse than us because they didn’t have all the modern conveniences in the home that we have today. One of my patients used to tell me about how she had to go outside in the middle of the night because they didn’t have a bathroom in the house.

It is vital that we treat our elders with dignity and respect. We must make sure they feel needed, loved and respected. It is of extreme importance that we recognize they miss the little things of life, such as not being able to go to the mailbox and find a letter addressed to them.

I would give both arms and legs if I could hug my Mom and Dad today but they have passed away. If your parents are living, please hug them today and tell them how much you appreciate them. It will make the heart of our Saviour happy.
