UNCLENCH THAT FIST

"And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched."

Mark 9:43 King James Version

Christmas is a time of rejoicing, a time of honoring the Christ Child. Yet, sad to say, some people will use the holiday as a time to party with their friends and drink alcohol. I have read and heard many testimonies of people who said their spouse hits them when he or she is drinking.

This verse says to cut off your hand if it offends you. Jesus is saying to us that if we are doing something with our hands that cripple our relationship with Him and with others, we need to stop doing it.

When you hit somebody, not only do you hurt him or her physically; you hurt him or her emotionally. The scars of the physical abuse will sometimes disappear, but the scars of the emotional abuse penetrate into the heart and only go away through the Healing, Compassionate Love of Jesus.

Not only do we inflict pain upon the person we hit; we also inflict pain upon the family. If a child sees his dad hit his mother, or his mother hit his dad, that child is scarred emotionally for life. The child grows up with insecurities, loneliness, and fear.

Please don’t hit anybody, and don’t provoke someone to become so angry that they hit you. Sometimes when we say harsh and critical words back to someone, we are just pouring fuel on the flames. Let’s make Christmas a day that will bring happiness to Jesus.
