WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVE

“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”

Matthew 12: 35 – 37 King James Version

Many years ago I checked myself into a hospital because I was feeling suicidal. I didn’t want to live but I didn’t want to take my life because I didn’t want to hurt my sister. I wasn’t walking with Jesus at the time and didn’t realize that if I had taken my life I not only would not have been saved, I would have broken His heart.

One day, a nurse told me that she would come and visit me when I got out of the hospital. She said that I could trust her to come see me; she promised me and I looked forward to that with eagerness. She never came to see me when I was discharged. I called the hospital one day when she was on duty and asked her why she hadn’t come to visit me. She replied “I just told you that so you would stop feeling sorry for yourself”. Needless to say, it devastated me and made me stop trusting everybody.

Had the nurse told me that she said it to encourage me, I would have been grateful, but she just said it so that I would stop complaining. Many times we say and do things with wrong motives and it makes Jesus unhappy. She had promised me and she broke her promise. I have been guilty also of breaking promises in the past. When we make a promise to someone, especially to Jesus, we need to honor our commitment. Have you make a heart commitment to Jesus? Is He your Saviour?
