"Direct, control, suggest, this day,
All I design, or do, or say,
That all my powers, with all their might,
In Your sole glory may unite." --- O. Winslow
It is on the basis of Christ's finished work that we surrender ourselves to God.
We do not work up to salvation; but down from it. We do not serve
to be saved; but being saved, we serve. --- F. B. Meyer
While working as a tide surveyor he studied for the ministry, and for the
last 43 years of his life preached the gospel in Olney and London. At 82, Newton said,
"My memory is nearly gone, but I remember two things, that I am a
great sinner, and that Christ is a great Saviour." No wonder he
understood so well grace--the completely undeserved mercy and favor of God.
Newton's tombstone reads, "John Newton, Clerk, once
an infidel and libertine, a servant of slaves in Africa, was, by the rich mercy of our Lord
and Saviour Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed
to preach the faith he had long labored to destroy." But an even greater
testimony outlives John Newton in the hundreds of hymns he wrote, one being his "AMAZING GRACE, HOW SWEET THE SOUND," perhaps the greatest gospel song ever written, which can be found at:

Our First President said: "There is a rank due to the United States, among nations, which will be withheld, if not absolutely lost, by the reputation of weakness. If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it; if we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known that we are at all times ready for war." -- George Washington - (5th Annual Message, 3/12/1793) Ref: George Washington: A Collection, W.B. Allen, ed. (488).
